They were quickly followed by missionaries, and then the British. A safe harbor for British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, Ontario became the site of many battles during the War of 1812. It eventually became one of the four provinces of the new Dominion of Canada, and today plays a major role in the culture and economy of Canada.
